According to a recent report in CIO magazine, healthcare data volumes are growing at a 49% annual rate, nearly doubling every two years. With such huge mountains of data, there’s no way the typical prior-generation reporting means (like spreadsheets, tabular reports, and the like) can keep up.

I think the biggest opportunity exists in closing the gap around small data. “Big data” analytics and visualization is a hot topic today, but the work that I lead around healthcare quality and process improvement allows me to connect the dots from the executive table and front-line operations.

What do you believe is the biggest opportunity for healthcare organizations and data visualization?

Providing the right information from trustworthy data sources for providers and business leaders to act and make decisions. As an analytics department it is tempting to provide more information via a visualization than is necessary for the decision-making process. Focusing on which data are required and telling a concise story through visualizations helps to decrease the cognitive load when making decisions.
